Polardistans is actually two races, one of approximately 160 kilometers (PD160) and one of approximately 300 kilometres PD 300. Polardistans 2018 will be conducted 6 – 9 of March 2018 and becomes the 18th Edition of the contest.

The unique feature of the race is that the competitors have to bring all the equipment needed to carry out the race safely, including food for themselves and their dogs, on the sledge. No help may be accepted during the contest and the contest is only open to registered polar dogs of the breeds Alaskan malamute, Greenland dog, Samoyed and Siberian husky

The competition goes on marked trails in a varied landscape of pine trees and birch forests, Marsh and open mountains in an area within a triangle between Särna, Lofsdalen and Lillhärdal, with start and finish in Särna.

The first start will be Tuesday the 6th of March, and the last time for the finish will be on Friday the 9th of March, at 12:00.

The Secretariat

The Secretariat can be found at Särna Camping. Opening hours of the Secretariat can be found in the race programme that will be published on the website. At registration, in the Secretariat, you should have with you:

  • pedigrees in the original.

  • legible copies of all non-Swedish-registered dogs.

  • vaccination certificates in original.

  • completed driver's statement.

  • completed application form for examinations.

  • 200 SEK (payment with CREDIT CARD)as the deposit for dog tags.

  • for dogs older than 10 years, veterinary certificate is demanded.

  • foreign drivers should have the "musher" and/or proof of insurance.

Start

The race has an "open" start on the area in front of the yellow main building on the campsite. The starting time for each class will be announced on the website as soon as possible after the registration is closed.

Map

A map showing the trail is included in the entry fee and handed out in connection with the registration in the Secretariat. Please note that the trail map is not to scale. Brief description and map image is presented on the website. If you want to have a more detailed map than the one included we recommend you to buy one or more of the following maps:

  1. Fjällkartan W1 Grövelsjön-Lofsdalen (1:100 000) is published by Lantmäteriet. The map can be found at most well-stocked outdoor shops and can also be ordered online from, for example www.kartbutiken.se

  2. Nordic area snowmobile map (the scale is uncertain, approx. ca 1:200 000). Can be purchased from Idre Snowmobile Club.

  3. SOND = SkoterOmrådeNorraDalarna (1:100 000). Can be purchased at well-stocked scooter shops/scooter rental company, or ordered online from http://www.sond.se/.

  4. Idre – Lofsdalen, published by Calazo (1:50 000). The map can be found at most well-stocked outdoor shops and can also be ordered online from, for example www.kartbutiken.se

  5. Utekartan Rogen – Grövelsjön (1:50 000). The map can be found at most well-stocked outdoor shops and can also be ordered online from, for example www.kartbutiken.se.

None of the map covers the entire trail of the race. So for those of you who shall run the PD300 and only wants to buy one map we recommend no. 5. On this map you will miss a few kilometers at Digerflon (PD300 stage 2) and a little (stage 1 & 3) at the start/finish and at Östomsjön (stage 1). If you buy two maps, we recommend no. 3 and no. 5.

For those of you that shall run the PD160 we recommend no. 3, alternatively no. 1. Even here you will miss the same part of the trail as described above concerning the PD300

Marking

The trail runs mainly along the marked snowmobile trails ( ) which will be supplemented by signs in accordance with the WSA race rules. Most signs have reflexes and warnings will be positioned at road crossings. We follow the WSA's rules for trail markings. For more information look at the WSA website, http://www.wsa-sleddog.com

PD300 has a mandatory veterinary re-check in connection with the mandatorey six-hours rest and another veterinary re-check in connection with the mandatory four-hour rest. PD160 has a mandatory veterinary re-check at the checkpoint, but no mandatory rest.
